New reports released through Politico reveal that U.S president Donald Trump is proposing a new plan for low-income families to start receiving food boxes rather than food stamps. It says the box will be available every month and packed with non-perishable food items.

White House OMB Director Mick Mulvaney refer to the boxes as ‘Blue Apron-type program‘ in reference to the meal kit boxes that has likely perceived not to have performed well since its introduction in 2017. The plan is said to save the government money and provide families with more food options than what the food stamps currently used.

This proposal is part of the White House’s fiscal budget  for 2019 and ii is meant to replace half of the money families receive from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. America’s Harvest Box, unlike the Blue Apron boxes, will not include meats and vegetables but rather items such as peanut butter, cereal, shelf-stable milk, canned fruits and more.

He added; ‘In terms of how recipients will receive the box, USDA spokesman Tim Murtaugh tells the publication that states would have flexibility when it comes to distribution, the projected savings does not include shipping door-to-door for all recipients involved.’
